Microchipping then registering your animal is an important part of responsible ownership. The NZCAR helps lost pets get home to their worried families. The NZCAR was created by Companion Animals New Zealand and has registered over one million animals.

In 2021 the NZCAR was totally revamped making it faster and easier to use for animal guardians and NZCAR agents alike.

Interested in BECOMING AN APPROVED microchip IMPLANTER?

The criteria for individuals wishing to apply for CANZ implanter status are:

1. A veterinary clinic or a qualified veterinarian.

2. A diploma (or higher) qualified veterinary nurse.

3. An implanter who has completed a recognised microchipping course.*

4. An organisation whose member of staff meets the above criteria.

If you don’t qualify as one of the above, CANZ will consider approving an implanter application upon written recommendation by a veterinarian, who will certify the implanter's proficiency at the time of a demonstration for cats, dogs and rabbits. Learn more about this here.

*At this time there are no approved tertiary ‘courses’ for microchip certification.
