TUESDAY 2 MARCH 2027

Harbourside, Wellington NZ

08:30 AM – 09:00 AM | Registration & Welcome Coffee

09:00 AM – 09:15 AM | Opening & Introduction

09:20 - 10:45: This session will set the foundation for the programme by exploring the “why” behind how we care for animals, drawing on latest behaviour, cognition, and welfare science. It will consider what animals need for a good life, how they experience the world, and what current evidence tells us about positive welfare.

MORNING TEA

11:10 - 13:00: This session will explore some of the key tensions currently shaping companion animal welfare in Aotearoa New Zealand. Through a series of presentations, speakers will examine the social, cultural, and systemic factors influencing the wellbeing of animals and the people who care for them, with a potential dedicated panel conversation on the current state - and future - of cat management.

LUNCH

13:50 - 15:30: This session will explore what effective, modern dog policy in Aotearoa should look like, with a focus on moving from reactive responses to prevention-based approaches. It will consider the underlying drivers of dog-related incidents, including issues like roaming dogs and the complex community factors that contribute to them, alongside a spotlight on greyhounds as a case study in welfare, regulation, and transition pathways.

AFTERNOON TEA

15:50 - 16:50: This closing panel will take a forward-looking view on the future of companion animal welfare and what meaningful change could look like. It will draw together themes from across the programme to consider what we might need to do differently to improve outcomes for animals, people, and communities.

16:50 - 17:00 | Closing remarks

EVENING: Assisi Awards dinner and networking

Following the conference day, delegates are invited to join us for the Assisi Awards Gala Dinner — a special evening celebrating outstanding contributions to animal welfare. Held every two-three years, the Assisi Awards recognise individuals whose dedication, leadership and commitment have made a significant difference to animals in Aotearoa and internationally. Named in honour of St Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals, the awards are a highlight of the animal welfare calendar and provide an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate achievements, and acknowledge those helping create a better future for animals.

Conference attendees will have the option to purchase a separate ticket to attend this memorable evening of celebration, connection and recognition.
